Following his graduation from the University of Moratuwa in 1987 Daswatte worked in the practice of C. Anjalendran before embarking on post-graduate studies in London including a Masters of Architecture in Advanced Architectural Studies.  He then joined the architectural consultancy of Geoffrey Bawa and was involved in a series of works in Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia, including the Kandalama Hotel in Dambulla.

Daswatte has been in partnership with Murad Ismail since 1997 in MICD Associates.  Lightness of structure and form and connection with the landscape and environment are particularly important to their design approach which is also appropriate to the climate and culture of the site.  The company has a variety of projects in its oeuvre including hotels, offices, schools and private homes.

A design critic and examiner at both the City School of Architecture in Colombo and the University of Moratuwa, Daswatte is also a Trustee of the Geoffrey Bawa and Lunuganga Trusts set up by the late Geoffrey Bawa to care for his properties No.11, 33rd lane Colombo 3 and Lunuganga. The trust also works towards conserving his work as part of a modern architecture conservation effort in Sri Lanka and also to promote excellence in architecture within the country through publications, awards schemes and exhibitions.

In 2016, Daswatte was appointed the Chairman of the Galle Heritage Foundation, responsible for looking after the UNESO World Heritage site of the Walled City of Galle.  His speaking assignments are numerous as are his books and articles in a variety of design and architecture magazines.
